West Virginia, Chicken Drama, Running and SCUBA... BUSY!

Last weekend we packed up the family and headed down to visit our friends at Snowshoe, WV.

It also happened to be the same weekend as Blues, Brews & BBQ. Perfect timing.

Our friends' daughter Grace was turning 2, so we brought her some books. However, we didn't want her almost 4 year old brother to feel left out, so Jay picked out a book for him.

Blues, Brews, BBQ and... ziplining?

I tried the Nutty Blonde from Morgantown Brewing Company. Oddly delicious!

Grace grew tired of her birthday tutu, so everyone took turns wearing it.

Jay... everyone's favorite uncle.

Double yolker from one of our Anconas

We arrived home to discover that two of our new girls finally started laying... AND one of our roosters was missing. A few feathers were the only clue of his disappearance.

Post-run and filthy from wing clipping. This is Lucky, no worse for the wear after her neck degloving injury when she was two weeks old

Monday morning I received a phone call from one of my girlfriends. A neighbor had posted on my Facebook page that a dog was attacking our chickens. That explains what happened to the rooster!

I'm pretty sure that the dog belongs to one of the neighbors at the end of our village, but of course they don't keep it confined to a yard or tied up. I can't blame the poor dog, it's the people that are the problem. Our neighbor called animal control who caught it and took it to the humane society. The animal control officer said that someone pulled in the driveway after they caught the dog. The person claimed that the dog had been hanging out there and they thought that the previous owners had left it. I don't buy it for a second... I'm sure that the person was just worried about getting in trouble.

The neighbor managed to get the hen away from the dog. It looks like it was my silver laced wyandotte, who is a gorgeous bird. She doesn't appear to have any blood or wounds fortunately. Poor girl.

The flighty hens (Anconas, White Marans, Easter Eggers and Wyandottes) all had their wings clipped when I got home from my run at Adkins Arboretum. No more escaping their run to get into trouble. Only supervised free ranging from here on out!

Running is going well. I'm slow, but I've been sticking with the C25k program. I start Week 6 with my next run. Last night I was supposed to run 20 minutes straight with no stopping. I opted for a lovely wooded path that turned out to be narrow and filled with roots and spiderwebs. So between the arachnoleptic fits and tripping over things, I made it to 11 minutes before I had to walk. However, I only walked for a minute & a half before finishing the rest of the program. Not too shabby.

Our SCUBA class is almost over. It's been a lot of fun and I will miss the regular pool work. I never thought that I would end up being so comfortable underwater - especially considering my fear of deep water. The difficulties that I had doing the skills during Discover SCUBA in Australia are almost laughable to me now. I can now set up my gear, doff and don my SCUBA equipment at depth and the surface, remove & replace my mask and clear it, use an alternate air source, recover my regulator, maintain neutral buoyancy (it's admittedly a work in progress), do a tired diver tow, all sorts of things.

The final exam is on Wednesday and we'll be doing our open water checkout dives on September 28th and 29th at Lake Rawlings. I was hoping to get our Advanced Open Water course completed next... which we really could do by mid-October. However, we are hoping to buy a new car by the end of the year and we need to put any extra cash towards a down payment. Not to mention that we'll probably be spending a lot of money when we get our puppy! No word on a breeding yet, so it looks like we'll be bringing home puppy closer to Christmas or even January.

That's the latest dirt!

Getting surfed, WV style on the New River

This weekend, Jay and I are heading down to wild and wonderful West Virginia to visit friends, which got me thinking about whitewater rafting.

I really need to do it some more. After all, raft a class V river is on my 101 list. I found this video on Facebook again recently while talking to one of our docs about rafting. To date I've never taken a swim while rafting, even on this wild ride. The fun stuff starts about 1:55 in. We thought we'd be surfing forever.

This is the video on Facebook. Since it's on Facebook and not shared through YouTube, I'm not sure how to post it on here permanently or edit the size... I guess you have to click through the link. :(

25 Things – If I had a million dollars

Or more accurately, $245 million dollars (cash payout).

Like anyone who has ever spent a buck buying a lottery ticket, I spend the days around the drawing thinking about what I’d do with my cash.

Here are 25 Things that I would do (in no particular order) if I won:
  1. Quit my job (with two weeks notice, of course – I would even stay on to train my replacement)
  2. Hire a great trust lawyer
  3. Hire my old coworkers from Wilmington Trust to manage my money (I’d need my planner/CPA, investment guru, trust experts and personal banker)
  4. Set up a trust to own a business or two
  5. Set up another trust to provide for my family
  6. Have one of the businesses pay my friends to be my friends
  7. Fund a business idea for my friends
  8. Set up a philanthropic foundation
  9. Fully fund my dad’s scholarship fund (perhaps through the foundation)
  10. Buy this island for our commune
  11. Buy this penthouse in Coolangatta
  12. Buy this property in Key West
  13. Buy a winery in New Zealand - that way I'll never run out of wine!
  14. Go to school full-time and get a 4 year degree
  15. Get massages once a week
  16. Have a spa day once a month
  17. Hire a housekeeper – I despise cleaning!
  18. Get in fantastic shape with all of my free time
  19. Hire a personal shopper/stylist
  20. Do a SCUBA liveaboard trip in Australia to the GBR and the Whitsundays
  21. Visit Antarctica and play with the penguins
  22. Invest in Downtown Denton
  23. Buy a boat or two (as an investment for bareboat/charters and to play whenever I wanted)
  24. Buy our neighbors' houses & rehab their properties
  25. Shark cage dive with Great Whites in South Africa
Those things are on my list... what would YOU do with $245 million? What do you think, Kelly?

Alton Brown's Homemade Marshmallows

Homemade Marshmallows on the Food Network

Remember my Summer Bucket List? I'm checking stuff off. This weekend I made marshmallows from scratch.

Water, Sugar, Gelatin, Corn Syrup, Kosher Salt and Vanilla

They were AWESOME. A bit messy, but delicious. It was my first time making candy. You make a syrup with the sugar, corn syrup & water, then pour it into the mixer with the gelatin. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to clean my saucepan afterwards, but it was fine.

Whip it good

Spread in pan (prepared with cooking spray & mixture of half cornstarch, half powdered sugar) with an oiled spatula

After three hours, up to overnight, you turn them onto a cutting board and slice them with a pizza cutter. It was messy and I forgot to take a photo.

Make s'mores immediately.

We were going to have a fire to roast the marshmallows, but it was too windy

Gooey perfection.

Alton Brown has never led me astray.

Now go make some candy.

Eight years

It's been eight years since I lost my dad.

As I've posted before, I like to leave a little bit of him everywhere I go. Fortunately, my Aunt Nancy gave me a little of him to take with me while we were traveling in Australia and New Zealand.

This week I'm planning to take him to two places that he loved: Martinak and Adkins Arboretum.

Here are a few of the places where I left dad on vacation:

Mount Maunganui, New Zealand

Daintree Rainforest, QLD, Australia

Hobbiton, Matamata, New Zealand

Woodlyn Park, Waitomo, New Zealand

Bay View, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

Coolangatta, QLD, Australia

Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Islands, QLD, Australia

I've left dad in six countries so far: USA, Canada, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Australia, and New Zealand. He has visited many more countries. He traveled extensively through France with Nancy and I, then went to a number of other countries while Nancy was on her way back to Australia.

It's my goal to leave a little bit of dad on each continent. Two down, five to go.

Weekend plans

The hubby and I are supposed to have date night tonight. Date night last month was canceled because our friend Brian came to visit. One advantage to having date night on the first Friday of the month is that we get bonus points on our Chase Sapphire Preferred Card for anything we spend dining.

Jay wants to do something active. I'm not so sure that my body is up for much more than a walk. I've been good. Too good. Since last Friday, I have only had one day off of active. Couch 25k runs were on Friday, Monday, and Thursday (yesterday). Last Saturday I went kayaking and did the ropes course. Tuesday I went to Pilates with Angela, where my hip was making horrifying noises and gave me quite a lot of trouble. Wednesday is our SCUBA night, which burns a ton of calories.

I also suffer from migraines. Over the past week, I have had no less than four. I woke up with one this morning as well. I have been burning through the Imitrex, believe me. I had ONE beer this week. My boss joked that maybe I was getting so many migraines because I wasn't drinking enough.

This is the only drink I had this week

So let's just say that tonight I am really not feeling up to being active. I want to have dinner somewhere nice, go on a stroll through town, then go home and watch a movie.

If the hubs insists on doing something active, I am going to suggest that we go to the Caroline County Fair, where we can watch the Dress a Goat and Greased Pig contests. I'm pretty sure that they also have a rock wall on the fairgrounds, so if he wants to be active, he can climb that while I watch.

Tomorrow, I'll be helping with setup for Fiber Fest and then hopefully we will be going down to the beach. Also on tap for this weekend: marshmallow making and rooster eating.
